Parfums Grenoville is one of those great "obscure" French perfume houses from the 20th century which was established by Paul Grenoville at 20 rue Royale, Paris in 1879. He actually changed his family name from ‘Grenouille’, which means frog in French. The company was associated with Marie Marthe Richard Vive in 1910, and then after 1923 the company was affiliated with Parfise, and won silver medal in 1925.
The business did very well for many many years and the perfumery passed down through numerous hands while producing a prodigious list of releases throughout the teens and 1920s. In 1943 the company even acquired another company, the smaller Parfums de Clamy. Despite surviving two through two World Wars, Grenoville gradually declined. After 1940s, there were fewer releases, one dating from the 1950s which was ‘Esbroufe' and finally 'XX Vincent' was released in 1971. Grenoville perfumes were often housed in Baccarat bottles or those from Les Cristalleries de Nancy.
Christmas Night is a little known fragrance nowadays from this venerable old perfumery. I found this lovely old bottle and it took me some effort to remove the stopper, which has probably been frozen since the 1930's. It demonstrates a fantasically good seal, as there has been little to no evaporation over the years. Once I finally got the stopper free, I was pleasantly surprised by the lovely fragrant molecules that rose into the air, filled with the spirit of Christmas. Very much similar to Caron's beautiful Nuit de Noel or Molinard's lovely Xmas Bells or Cloches de Noel, this perfume has a bright loveliness that really spells Christmastime!
There are no notes available or descriptions of this lovely old perfume, but my guess is that is is something like this:
Top notes are Bergamot, Neroli, Orange Blossom, Ylang Ylang, and Juniper
Heart notes Rose, Jasmine, Carnation, Cinnamon, and Cloves
Base notes are Pine, Sandalwood, Oak Moss, Woods, and Amber
Offered here is a very rare Christmas perfume that is actually well suited to men as much as women. It is beautiful made and has survived the years. A lovely fragrant gift to give at Christmastide!
