Established by Ernest Daltroff in 1904, Parfums Caron was originally located on Rue de la Paix in Paris. Daltroff purchased the perfumery from Anne-Marie Caron and kept the original name. At the same time, he met Félicie Wanpouille, who became his partner and an important contributor to the rise of the house. While Daltroff created fragrances, Wanpouille designed bottles and served as an artistic director.

From the beginning, Parfums Caron was the house dedicated solely to fragrance, unlike houses like Chanel or Christian Dior that were first and foremost fashion houses. While the perfume houses produced more fragrances than fashion houses, by the 1920s women started to look at perfume the same way they regarded new fashion styles. However, as the couture fragrances became more and more popular, they provided a stable point in the ever changing world fashion, therefore the pace of perfume production began to decline. Subsequently, however, Caron has burst back into the front runners of a very elite and niche market perfume business.

Launched in 1954, Poivre by Caron proved that truly remarkable perfume is a necessity. Its spicy top note mingles with a rich floral heart and woody base. Caron would set the world soaring in passion with this sensual fragrance. It took rare audacity to start with a hot spicy pepper top note, backed up by a typically Caron rich floral heart, and woody base notes. As the most powerful scent, pepper appeals to both men and women. The nose behind this fragrance is Michel Morsetti. Poivre extrait starts off with a firey and earthy spark of crushed black pepper and sharp florals, with Ylang Ylang standing out. Then, like a slow-motion olfactive explosion, it unfurls carnation's clovey facets, weaving together floral and spice, with sweet warmth from clove and opoponax.

To add fuel to the fire, so to speak, it turns out that pepper is not the only note that signifies darkness and danger in Poivre. Not only has the American carnation largely lost its characteristic spicy smell, it appears that we don’t have the dark associations with carnations and cloves that Europeans do. In France, cloves have been considered mysterious for centuries. Carnations have long been a great favourite of French perfumers.

Top notes are Carnation, Geranium, Rose, Jasmine, and Tuberose
Heart notes are Ylang Ylang, Red Pepper, Black Pepper, and Clove
Base notes are Opopanax, Cedar, Sandlewood, Oak Moss, and Vetiver
