Robert d'Avray is a historic French perfume house that emerged in the mid-20th century, based in Versailles, France. The brand is known for its elegant and sophisticated fragrances, often presented in beautifully designed bottles.

There were several notable fragrances that emerged from this perfume house in the mid 1940's, includeing En Rêvant (1948) .. a perfume is characterised by fresh citrus top notes, a heart of rose, jasmine, and violet, and a warm base of musk and vanilla. It evoked a sense of elegance and timeless beauty, making it suitable for romantic occasions. Following this came Ambré, Andantino, Brise Média, Chinois, Chypre, Colonnade, Marjolaine d'Avray, Muguet, and Symphonie Amoureuse. These fragrances were launched around the year 1950 and are noted for their refined compositions.

Fougère and Fleur de Tabac eau de cologne variants were also produced in the 1950's and are occasionally found in vintage perfume auctions. The fragrance of tobacco flowers is often described as a blend of sweet, floral, and warm spice notes, distinct from the smoky scent of burning tobacco leaves. It can also have earthy, green, or even slightly metallic undertones. Some people find it to be a unique, unisex, and even intoxicating scent

While Robert d'Avray is no longer an active brand, its perfumes are occasionally available through vintage perfume auctions and collectors' markets. The brand's commitment to quality and artistry has left a lasting impression on the world of perfumery. I have been lucky to find a few of these famous bottles in auctions in Paris.

The term 'Chenonceaux' written across the label of this bottle has strong significance in the French perfume world.Robert d'Avray is a historic French perfume house that emerged in the mid-20th century, based in Versailles, France. The brand is known for its elegant and sophisticated fragrances, often presented in beautifully designed bottles. The significance of Chenonceau in French perfumery primarily stems from the inspiration it provides for fragrances and the association with its history. Chenonceau is a famous French castle, also known as the "ladies' castle," renowned for its elegance and Renaissance architecture. Its history and association with powerful women like Catherine de' Medici, known for her refinement, contribute to its image of grace and sophistication, which can inspire perfumers.

Specifically, the Dames de Chenonceau rose, a fragrant variety named in honor of the château, embodies this elegance and sophistication. This rose, with its rich blend of scents like orange, anise, dill, narcissus, leaves, and fruits, directly links Chenonceau to the world of fragrance.

While Catherine de' Medici herself is associated with the history of perfume in France, it's not clear that Chenonceau was a specific center for her perfumery. Her perfumer's laboratory was connected to her private apartments at the French court by a secret passage to ensure the exclusivity of her custom fragrances.

In essence, Chenonceau's significance in French perfumery comes from its association with elegance, history, and beautiful surroundings, inspiring specific fragrance creations like the Dames de Chenonceau rose and the Chenonceau perfumes. You will see the outline of the castle on the red label.

Offered here is a lovely four ounce bottle of Fougère fragrance representing the Chateau gardens. It smells wonderful .. This is very rare now ..
