Gueldy was established in 1905 by Lelaurin and A. Sergent at 370 rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honore in Paris. Gueldy. Inc., also operated at 21 East 40th St.. New York. By 1913, the company was later acquired by P. Thibaud et Cie, a major toilet articles company affiliated with Gibbs, an English toiletries and toothpaste company, established in 1712.
A. Sergent also established Parfums de Sergy in 1930, which produced slightly lower priced perfumes for women who wanted beautiful perfumes, but couldn't afford a very expansive bottle. Later, Parfums de Sergey merged with Gueldy. Sergy was also reported as "Gerly". Sergy perfumes then gained more status as a result of its merger with Gueldy.
Sergy may have been associated with Parfumerie Francelys, as one of their perfume bottles was the same shape. Gueldy became a major company with large exports. It won a gold medal at the 1925 Paris Exhibition.
The Belle de Mai rose, also known as Rose de Mai or May Rose, is a specific type of Rosa centifolia cultivated in Grasse, France, renowned for its sweet, honey-like fragrance. This rose is primarily harvested in May and early June. The harvest is a significant event in Grasse, attracting visitors and influencing the local perfume industry.
The harvest occurs for about four to five weeks, primarily between May and early June, coinciding with the blooming period of the rose.
This rose is highly prized for its strong, sweet, honey-like scent, which is intensified when warmed by the sun. The harvest is a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages, with local harvesters carefully picking the blooms. The Belle de Mai rose, particularly when grown in Grasse's unique microclimate, is renowned for its exceptional fragrance, described as honeyed, spicy, powdery, and green, according to NYC.ph. Its rich, opulent scent is highly prized in natural perfumery. Here's my guess at the ingredients ..
Top notes are Orange Blossom, Neroli, and Rosa Damascena
Heart notes are Mai Rose, Bulgarian Rose, Honeysuckle, Jasmin, and Heliotrope
Base notes is Sandalwood
In essence, the Belle de Mai rose is more than just a flower in Grasse; it is a symbol of the region's rich perfume heritage, a prized raw material for luxurious fragrances, and a testament to the traditions of the perfume industry.
