The House of Guerlain is one of the oldest perfume houses in the world. It was founded in 1828 when Pierre-Francois Pascal Guerlain opened up his first perfume store on 42, Rue de Rivoli in Paris.

Pierre-Francois composed and manufactured custom perfumes with the help of his two sons, Aime & Gabriel. His unique approach was to personalize perfume for a specific person, place or event. Honore de Balzac commisioned his own eau de toilette during the writing of Cesar Birotteau, and the periodical La Sylphide, le Journal des Elegances, scented each issue with a different fragrance by Guerlain.

Guerlain catered to the high society of Paris, and obtained a very loyal following. The perfume house was so successful that Guerlain decided to open a flagship store at 15, Rue de la Paix in Paris in 1840. The house was at its peak in 1853 with it's fragrance Eau de Cologne Imperiale. This perfume gained Guerlain the prestigious title of His Majesty's Official Perfumer of France. This in turn led him to create perfumes for other royals such as Queen Victoria of England, the Empress Sissi of Austria, the Queen of Belgium and Queen Isabella of Spain as well as other crowned heads of royalty.

Pierre-Francois passed away in 1854 and his sons inherited the perfume house. Aime became the master perfumer, a tradition that would be upheld for the next master perfumer in lineage. Gabriel managed and further expanded the house.

Composed in 1920 by Jacques Guerlain following a trip to the Riviera, the Eau de Fleurs de Cédrat is the most heavily citrus-infused of Guerlain's Eaux de Cologne. Inspired by the beauty of the Mediterranean landscapes, this scent is brimming with the heady aromas of the region’s luscious countryside – citron, lemon, and verbena – its sillage unfurling in a sun-drenched ray of light, fizzing with refreshing, tangy notes.

Zesty, fruity, and tangy, citron is a multi-faceted fruit similar to lemon. Unlike most citrus fruits, citron isn’t eaten, but it is heavily used in confectionery. This may well have been the very first citrus fruit to arrive on European soil from Asia. Deliciously refreshing, it differs from lemons in its bumpy peel and larger size, which can exceed 20 centimetres across. Citron is used in perfume-making, and is extracted "by expression", the traditional technique used for citrus fruits. It is incorporated into perfumes for the delicate richness of the zingy, tangy note it lends.

In celebration of the Eau de Fleurs de Cédrat's centenary, a hand-painted palladium Bee Bottle has been released, embellished with a lush bouquet of palladium leaf-gilded leaves and flowers. A work of art that harmonises beautifully with the perfume's Mediterranean inspiration, both fragrance and plant-decorated bottle are imbued with a sense of voluptuousness in full bloom.

"If Eau de Fleurs de Cédrat were a color, it would be pop-art yellow. The initial impression is of grated lemon zest and lots of it. The bitterness of bergamot and lime add an additional twist, but it doesn’t happen until a few minutes into the development. Also, despite the “citron flowers” promised by the name, the composition is not particularly floral. It’s as classical of a cologne as you can find.

"What makes Eau de Fleurs de Cédrat unusual is the clarity of its lemon note. The original formula I’ve had the chance to try is just as crisp and clean as the contemporary version, and it makes it rather unusual. The effect is zesty and natural, but with enough abstract, impressionistic quality to make a perfume, rather than merely the scent of lemon oil.

"Another element that makes Eau de Fleurs de Cédrat a cologne worthy of your attention is that it lasts reasonably well. Even on a hot day, it will linger for a few hours, maintaining the dazzling lemon brightness of its opening. When it disappears, it leaves no trace of cloudy musk or sweet woods that ruin so many citrus blends. While not as complex and elegant as Chanel Eau de Cologne or Eau de Guerlain, it’s delightful and uplifting.

Eau de Fleurs de Cédrat was created in 1920 by Jacques Guerlain, and if you examine it closely, you’ll recognize that it’s the bergamot-lemon accord of Shalimar. (A tip: if you want to make Shalimar more effervescent, try layering it with Eau de Fleurs de Cédrat, experimenting with the amount of the latter.)
