The House of Worth was a French house of high fashion that specialized in haute couture. The historic house was founded in 1858 by designer Charles Frederick Worth. It continued to operate under his descendents until 1952 but finally closed in 1956.

In 1924, with the House was operated by grandson Jacques Worth, when he led the house to venture into the perfume market. The company's first fragrance, developed by perfumer Maurice Blanchet, was Dans La Nuit. Glass-maker René Lalique was commissioned to design the bottle. Les Perfumes Worth was established as a separate business and would launch over 20 fragrances between 1924 and 1947.

Worth's 'Dans la Nuit' (In the Night) was launched in 1922 in Paris, France. It was available in a wider distribution by 1924. This was Worth's signature fragrance. It was initially a gift to distinguished clientele of the fashion house. The perfume’s production was halted during WW2, and it didn’t reach counters on US shores again until 1953.

Worth, under Jean Charles and Maurice Blanchet, released five perfumes in a chronological sequence to tell a passionate story .. Dans la Nuit (1925), Vers le Jour (1925), Sans Adieu (1929), Je Reviens (1932), Vers Toi (1934) .. "In the night ... towards dawn ... without saying goodbye ... I will return ... towards you."

Apart from creating thus a mystical, subtle love confession simply via the names, Worth collaborated with René Lalique into creating memorable bottles for the fragrances. Dans la Nuit was encased in a blue boule bearing the stars of the nightime sky. Vers le Jour was on the contrary in bright, yellowing red glass like the dawn. Sans Adieu was in green, with a cone-head cap with cut-outs which makes an impression even today.

Originally presented in an orb shaped Art Deco-styled flacon, known as the boule, made by René Lalique et Cie. The earliest design for the stopper was a disc with an eclipsed moon of crystal-polished glass in bas-relief against a cobalt-stained sky filled with raised, crystal-polished stars. This style stopper was available from the mid-1920's through the mid-1930's, when it was discontinued due to an allegation of trademark infringement. At that point Worth presented the perfume in a flat round Lalique flacon like this one. It is marked Lalique and has been waxed around the bouchon by the person who shipped it to me, so I have not removed that wax.

Middle notes are Carnation, Cinnamon, Orris, Jasmine, Ylang Ylang, Lily of the Valley, and Rose
Base notes are Sandalwood, Tonka Bean, Amber, Vanilla, and Vetiver

Offered here is a lovely three ounce flacon of this beautiful fragrance in the Eau de Cologne format. It is quite pristine and has never been opened, still having its original baudruche and string seals. Hard to find in this vintage flacon. It comes in its original presentation box ..
