Rochas began as a French fashion house founded by Marcel Rochas in 1925. From 1925 until 1953, when the haute couture division closed its doors, Marcel Rochas dressed women in forward-thinking fashions that also celebrated traditional feminine silhouettes.

The company expanded its offerings to include fragrances, starting with a trio of perfumes, Avenue Matignon, Air Jeune and Audace, in 1934. The perfumes were taken off the market during World War II, but the company's most famous fragrance, the classic Femme, was launched in 1943 and remains a perennial best-seller.

Launched in 1969, Monsieur Rochas is a classic masculine aromatic chypre, created by perfumer Guy Robert, designed to evoke the scent of a "cold smoking pipe". Known for its elegant, "old-school" barbershop vibe, it features a complex blend of dry tobacco, sage, lavender, citrus, and oakmoss. It is often regarded as a refined, timeless scent for men.

Monsieur Rochas opens with citrus and herbal notes of lavender and sage, leading to a heart of geranium and cedar, with a base of oak moss, tobacco, and Russian leather. It has been described as a "gentlemen's scent" that combines mossy, citrusy, and slightly spicy notes, often highlighted by a distinctive chamomile note.

Created by renowned perfumer Guy Robert, who is also known for work at Hermes and Amouage. Luca Turin reportedly noted that the brief for the fragrance was "the smell of a cold smoking pipe". This lovely fragrance is often sought after in its vintage Eau de Cologne or Eau de Toilette forms.
