Elsa Schiaparelli was an Italian fashion designer who lived between 1890 and 1973. Along with Coco Chanel, her greatest rival, she is regarded as one of the most prominent figures in fashion between the two World Wars. Schiaparelli's designs were heavily influenced by surrealists like her collaborators Salvador Dalí, Giacometti and Jean Cocteau. Her clients included the heiress Daisy Fellowes and actress Mae West.
Schiaparelli’s perfumes for women and men .. almost all of which have names beginning with “S” .. were as interesting and inventive as her clothes.
'S' from Schiaparelli was originally launched in 1928. It was later renamed "Schiap" in 1934, and then renamed 'Sport' in 1952. It was created to be worn by men and women for sport. Subsequently it was relaunched again as 'S' in 1961.
Schiaparelli’s 'S' was a pioneering, unisex "sporty" perfume featuring sharp, green, and powdery notes, designed to challenge traditional gender scents. It highlighted, and often centered on, iris combined with aldehyde, musk, and woods, designed to be sharp and fresh rather than purely floral.
It was one of the first unisex fragrances, meant for both women and men, reflecting Elsa Schiaparelli’s belief in breaking gender boundaries. Described as a floral aldehyde or woody floral, it featured notes of iris, lily of the valley, and carnation, with a dry-down of musk, amber, and vetiver. 'S' was the first perfume in her collection, showcasing her superstitious fondness for the letter "S" and aligning with her "tangy" and unexpected fashion designs.
Top notes are Citrus, Madonna Lily, Hyacinth, and Galbanum
Heart notes are Rose, Iris, Carnation, and Jasmine
Base notes are Vetiver, Yugoslavian Oak Moss, Mysore Sandalwood, Iris, Musk, and Amber
