The Maison Molinard was founded in 1849 in Grasse, Provence, in the south of France, the cradle of the world's perfume industry. It has remained an entirely family-run business to this day, and is also the oldest of its kind. At that time, Molinard produced floral waters and Eau de Cologne, which it sold in its "little shop" in the town centre. In 1891, Queen Victoria stayed at Grasse, and bought Eau de Cologne there.

In 1900, the company moved into an old perfume factory, where the distillery structure was designed by Gustave Eiffel. Molinard is still there today. A typical Provençal showroom was set up, and its first customers were wealthy foreigners from England and Russia. They came to admire its magnificent collection of 17th and 18th century furniture, and buy Molinard Eau de Cologne together with all its floral fragrances.

The beautiful aromatic lavender used by Molinard is all grown in Grasse, and is a pivotal essence of the perfume industry there. Wonderful fields containing rows and rows of this gorgeous plant can be found there, and the warm breezes waft the scent of this classic flower all over the area.

Lavender is a flowering plant in the mint family, Lamiaceae, native to the mountainous zones of the Mediterranean, where it typically grows in sunny and stony habitants. Today it grows all around southern Europe, Australia, and the United States, boasting its woody branches covered with gray-green narrow leaves and small violet flowers, known for their strong and relaxing odor.

The English word “lavender” probably comes from Latin “lavare” meaning “to wash.” The origin of the modern name refers to the ancient tradition of using lavender in perfumed oils for bathing, as practiced in the times of the Roman Empire. Another possible interpretation stems from the earliest known English name for this herb .. livendula. Livendula is the Latin name for a livid or bluish color, and bears a strong reference to the violet flowers of lavender.

This Lavender extrait might also contain Bergamot, Citrus, Neroli, Orange Blossom, Pine, Rosemary, and Sage. The bottle is still sealed with an inner cap over the mouth that has prevented it from evaporating further over the years.
