Gucci was founded in Florence, Italy, in 1921 by Guccio Gucci, starting as a small family-owned leather goods and luggage shop. Over the decades, the brand evolved from an equestrian outfitter into a global luxury fashion powerhouse driven by several key creative directors and historical eras.
From 1921 Guccio Gucci established the house, designing early leather goods and innovating with alternative materials like woven hemp and bamboo during wartime shortages. By the early 1950s Guccio’s sons .. led by Aldo Gucci .. expanded the brand globally, introducing iconic motifs like the double-G logo, the horsebit loafer, and the Flora scarf. Internal family feuds and financial struggles nearly ruined the brand by the late 1980s.
Appointed as creative director, Tom Ford rescued the failing company by injecting high-octane glamour, provocative sex appeal, and sleek minimalism into the collections, turning Gucci into a massive commercial success once again. Former accessories designer Frida Giannini took over full creative direction, pivoting the brand toward a more nostalgic, feminine, and bohemian aesthetic rooted in Gucci's historical archives.
Gucci No. 1 was the very first fragrance released by the house of Gucci, officially launched in 1974. It marked the brand’s historic entry into the beauty market under the direction of Aldo Gucci, appealing to the luxury house's glamorous, high-end clientele. The perfume was created by legendary master perfumer Guy Robert .. the nose behind other iconic fragrances like Chanel No. 19 and Hermès Calèche.
Gucci No. 1 is classified as a classic, intricate Chypre Floral fragrance. True to the complex perfumery style of the 1970s, it features a massive, multi-layered blend of over 25 distinct notes:.
Top Notes are Aldehydes, Hyacinth, Green Notes, Geranium, Bergamot, Amalfi Lemon, and Palisander Rosewood. The opening is sharp, fresh, soapy, and bright.
Heart Notes are Carnation, Rose, Ylang Ylang, Iris, Jasmine, Lilac, Lily-of-the-Valley, Orchid, Neroli, and Heliotrope. This forms a dense, romantic, and slightly powdery floral "fantasia".
Base Notes: Oakmoss, Amber, Musk, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Vetiver, Cedar, Benzoin, Tonka Bean, and Vanilla. The dry-down is deeply warm, earthy, woody, and sensual.
Gucci No. 1 was officially discontinued in the 1992. Because it was produced before modern ingredient restrictions changed the perfume industry, specifically regarding the use of natural oak moss, it is highly coveted today by vintage perfume collectors.
