'According to a 1932 newspaper ad, Deltah's perfumes were created exclusively for them to be sold in exquisite jewelry displays next to their precious stones in only the finest jewelry stores. So they were expensively bottled in imaginative shapes - faceted to sparkle even among diamonds and pearls. The O.A. Hesla Company was the sole distributor of the perfumes. Some of the perfumes were boxed along with compacts and lipsticks.' Cleopatra's Boudoir.
A story published in 1932 in a local Prescott Arizona newspaper reported that the O.A. Hesla Company was the sole and exclusive agent for Deltah perfumes. Certainly the perfumography of Deltah Perfumes is very little known.
The one thing I noticed in my research is that Deltah did not advertise directly to the public but rather the perfumes were marketed directly to retailers, who then indepedently advertised them to the consumer, mostly it seems in little local newspapers.
"The amazing thing about Deltah is the quality of their juice! I noticed this first when I smelt their Chypre, that it was a really fine version of Chypre, very well preserved and full of the all important top notes. I take it as a special mark of the quality of the juice .. it was so good. Then when I opened this little bottle of Deltah No. 7, I was once again surprised by the quality of the scent. This time it is a simple composition featuring sweet, yet slightly bitter almond-cherry notes in what amounts to a lovely, straightforward rendering of Heliotrope. Some say heliotrope has a vanilla scent but to me, at least as presented in vintage perfumes, it has more of a baby powder type scent. Still it is a pleasing if old fashioned floral, very appropriate for early spring and something I would wear if in the mood for a soft, innocent scent." The Perfume Vault
In their advertisements, they state "Gardenia .. sensuous, yet secretly perceptible, is gardenia's perfume .. suggesting the fleeting loveliness of the rich white gardenia blossom. A captivating scent for the energetic, active woman who radiates vitality and self assurance."
While there are scant notes on the Internet about this historic perfume, I feel that though these were essentially 'American' perfumes, the label on this flacon states 'Paris, New York', which leads me to believe that the perfumes were in fact created in France and then imported by O.A. Hesla. Later on, the perfumes may have been manufactured in the USA, because other bottles that I have investigated only say 'New York'.
I am going to suggest that the perfume has the following structure and composition ..
Top notes are Orange Blossom, Bergamot, and Neroli
Heart notes are Gardenia, Tuberose, and Jasmine
Base notes are Patchouli, Vetiver, and Sandalwood
Offered here is a most charming flacon of this long lost perfume. The bottle is still sealed and looks to be in perfect condition. The adorable little box is very clean and has a pretty tassel. The hinge of the box is delicate. Very historic and highly collectible ..
