Established by Ernest Daltroff in 1904, Parfums Caron was originally located on Rue de la Paix in Paris. Daltroff purchased the perfumery from Anne-Marie Caron and kept the original name. At the same time, he met Félicie Wanpouille, who became his partner and an important contributor to the rise of the house. While Daltroff created fragrances, Wanpouille designed bottles and served as an artistic director.
"From the beginning, Parfums Caron was the house dedicated solely to fragrance, unlike houses like Chanel or Christian Dior that were first and foremost fashion houses. While the perfume houses produced more fragrances than fashion houses, by the 1920s women started to look at perfume the same way they regarded new fashion styles. However, as the couture fragrances became more and more popular, they provided a stable point in the ever changing world fashion, therefore the pace of perfume production began to decline. Subsequently, however, Caron has burst back into the front runners of a very elite and niche market perfume business." Bois de Jasmin.
Ernest was fascinated by technology and speed. At that time, space had become a major challenge for mechanics and engineers. The 1920's are also years of women pilots achieving great things. Helen Boucher was followed by Amelia Earhart, who crossed the Atlantic solo in May 1932. Inspired by these daring successes, Ernest created En Avion in 1932, distilled in a half moon shaped bottle on a cubic stand, the essence lies under a square stopper with a metal aviation steering compass incrusted at the top of the stopper. This very avant garde bottle is one of the first to combine glass and metal in perfume design. The bottle was eventually made by Pochet & Du Courval glassworks.
"Caron dedicated this fragrance to women who were ambitious enough to believe in their wildest dreams. A deep floral scent spiced with oriental accents convey the epic spirits of those times. Introduced in 1932. The nose behind this fragrance is Ernest Daltroff." Fragrantia.
