Operating since 1775, the House of Houbigant is the only fragrance house that has existed through four centuries of history. Through these centuries, the perfumers of the House of Houbigant have made groundbreaking discoveries in the formulation of perfumes that have revolutionized forever the way perfumes are constructed.
It is not an exaggeration to say that, without the House of Houbigant, modern perfumery as we know it today would not exist. It all began with just a basket of flowers. One day in Paris in 1775, a young man, Jean-Francois Houbigant, hung a hand painted sign of a basket of flowers over his little shop in rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. From the start his fragrances found favour with royalty and the nobility. Houbigant taught the titled women at the Court of Versailles how to perfume their fans so that just a fragrant flutter would send out a romantic message. When in 1793 Marie-Antoinette was executed by guillotine, she carried 3 vials of Houbigant perfume in her corsage to give her strength.
Launched in 1935, Houbigant’s Violette was part of a new line of concentrated soliflore perfumes .. these included Rose, Heliotrope, Muguet, Jasmine, Gardenia, and Lilac.
Houbigant’s Violette is a reminiscence of shady woods and was a master achievement in the making of a violet odour. For lovers of the woody violet this was an achievement of flower realism, an odour in perfection of the true violet of the woods.
Top notes are Aldehydes, Violet Leaf, and Green Notes
Middle notes are Violet, Rose, Ylang Ylang, and Tuberose
Base notes are Sandalwood, and Cedar
Offered here is an extraordinary and utterly pristine huge 6.5 oz. bottle of this fabulous perfume, housed in its original red leather wardrobe presentation box. I have never seen anything like this before, and am completely stunned to have it here. A very special edition, with the hand gilded scene on the bottom of the bottle. Previously from a Wanamaker store, presented in heavy Baccarat, one of a kind .. I looks to me as though the string has been cut, but the baudruche or onion skin seal is still in tact, and the perfume never used.
